Did you know that children of all ages can be diagnosed with scoliosis? In fact, about 5 percent of all children will experience some form of scoliosis during their youths. That being said, scoliosis is rather common. At Southwest Chiropractic, we can help your child find the best treatment for them if they have scoliosis.
Here are a few things you should note about scoliosis and the options your child has for treatment. Know This: Scoliosis May Have No Known Cause Many children who have scoliosis develop it suddenly and for no particular reason. Many parents wonder what they can do to prevent scoliosis from forming in their child, but because there is no known cause of the disease, there are also no known preventative measures to take. The best thing you can do for your child is to ensure they are checked for scoliosis during their regular checkups with their pediatricians and to get them the treatment they need as early as possible to prevent the disease from getting worse and requiring surgery to correct. Not Every Child Will Require Treatment Many times, scoliosis corrects itself without treatment. Other times, it’s so slight, that no treatment is needed. However, the best way to know what, if any, treatment is necessary for them is to take them to a qualified professional to receive a proper diagnosis. What Treatment Options Are Available? If your child’s chiropractor determines that they do need treatment to correct scoliosis or to prevent it from becoming worse as your child grows, they will most likely determine that your child a) wears a brace to prevent scoliosis from worsening during growth spurts, b) receives surgery to correct it, or c) both. According to the John Hopkins School of Medicine, only about 30 percent of children require a back brace and an even smaller percentage, about 10 percent, require surgery. Is Surgery Bad? The idea of your child receiving surgery can be nerve-wracking. But the prognosis for this kind of surgery is often good and shouldn’t be a big cause of stress and worry. A qualified chiropractor will be able to direct your child to the best surgeon for their needs. Schedule An Appointment With Southwest Chiropractic Today!
