Stress Management Treatment at Our El Paso Wellness Center

Unfortunately, there is no avoiding stress in this modern society we live in. From working, raising a family, getting a degree, unforeseen accidents and disasters, stress is an unwelcome part of our lives. Receiving chiropractic care is actually very effective in relieving the negative effects of stressors and creating a positive stress management routine for the body.

How Does Stress Affect the Body?

Our bodies experience stress through three different channels, which are body, emotions, and environment. The environmental stressors we experience are easy to understand. If you are relaxing at home and hear a loud crash in your front yard, you have experienced a moment of  environmental stress.

Stressors the body experiences can come from a wide range of sources. This can include poor eating habits that lead to malnutrition or being overweight.  Bodily stress can also come from a lack of sleep and repeated situations that lead to poor posture. Emotional stress is the adverse situations that take a toll on our mind and decision making. Emotional stressors can come from school, work, or family. One example takes place when we have a big project at work due with little time to finish. It can also include arguments with family or friends.

When you experience any of these three forms of stressors, the body decides on the fight or flight mechanism. The sympathetic nervous system jumps into action. This means that the heart rate increases, adrenaline and cortisol flow from the brain, and senses are more alert. Cortisol increases blood sugar as well. It also decreases systems in the body that might inhibit fight or flight. These reactions from the body give you the energy needed for flight or fight.

The Dangers of Being Over-Stressed

When perceived stressors are always present, like a stressful job or bad relationship, the sympathetic nervous system stays turned on. Health issues like anxiety, depression, muscle tension, neck and back pain, digestive problems, weight gain, sleep problems, impaired memory and concentration start cropping up. Stress management is an important aspect of overall wellness. While you may not be able to take the stressors out of your life, you certainly can control how you respond to them.

Chiropractic Care Can Help With Stress Management

Chiropractic care focuses on the spinal cord which is the heart of the nervous system. Adjustments help ease muscle tension and relieve pain. Having a balanced spine also helps the nervous system respond to stressors a lot better. Other treatments like improving nutrition, massage therapy, and other therapy services are also helpful in not just alleviating the bad effects of stress, but managing them as well. At Southwest Chiropractic, we believe in treating the body and achieving overall wellness.
